5 things to know about Bernadette Soubirous

You've heard the name. You may have seen the show. But how much do you really know about the girl behind the legend? Here are five things about Bernadette Soubirous that most people don't know.

1. She didn't want to go back to the grotto

After the first apparition on February 11, 1858, Bernadette was not keen to return. Her mother, alarmed by the story, initially forbade her from going back. It was a combination of peer pressure and her own inexplicable pull toward the site that brought her back — not religious ambition or a desire for attention.

2. She had a sharp sense of humor

Those who knew Bernadette in the convent describe her as warm, witty, and occasionally sardonic. She was not a passive, mournful figure. When a novice asked her what it felt like to be a saint, she reportedly replied: "Much like anyone else, except more tired."

3. She was never allowed to visit Lourdes again

After entering the Sisters of Notre Dame de Nevers convent in 1866, Bernadette never returned to Lourdes. She never saw the basilica built in honor of her visions. She spent the last thirteen years of her life in Burgundy, hundreds of kilometers from the grotto where everything began.

4. She was deeply skeptical of people who claimed special access to the divine

Bernadette had little patience for mystics, visionaries, and those who claimed extraordinary spiritual experiences. Having had such an experience herself — and knowing its cost — she was notably unsympathetic to those who seemed to seek it out.

5. Her last words were entirely ordinary

As she lay dying on April 16, 1879, Bernadette's final words were a simple prayer: "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for me, a poor sinner." No prophecy. No vision. Just the same simple faith she had carried her entire life.
